Stay Water Safe by Splashing into Winter with our Warm Water Swim Lessons! October 29, 2010

At SafeSplash we encourage all kids and parents to stay safe this winter and get ready for your next vacation by taking lessons before the busy summer season starts. Our programs are designed to teach your kids how to swim and learn safety skills that will get you prepared in the water.

As many parents already know Drowning is the second leading cause of death among children under the age of 13. Understanding what you should do and how to prepare around pools is an essential key to vacations and enjoying your time at the pool.

Follow these steps to practicing water safety:

No One is “Drown-proof.” Children need to learn to swim. Taking classes that are age appropriate may reduce the risk of drowning, but because kids develop at different rates, not all kids will be ready to swim at the same age. Click here to find out more information.

Take action to prevent drowning.  Only allow kids to swim in supervised areas and always swim with a parent or buddy. Know before you go. Don’t swim if you are not sure it is safe.  Do not rely on “floaties” or foam toys to protect your kids, only a US Coast Guard Approved life jacket should be worn. To read more click here.

Know how to respond to an emergency. Parents should take courses on CPR, First Aid and Basic Water Rescue to be prepared. Know when to call 9-1-1, and know who your lifeguards are and where to find them. To learn more about how you can be prepared, click here.

Q: Why do you love being a swim instructor?
A: I like being able to teach people lifelong skills.  I try to make fun memorable experiences for lifetime memories.

Q: What is your best tip or trick for other instructors?
A: Have patience.  Everything will happen in time.  I try to go with the flow to ease my students into their niche allowing them to build their self esteem.

Q: Do you have a favorite level to teach and why?
A: I love the babies because their smiles make the lessons worthwhile.

Q: What hobbies do you have outside of SafeSplash?
A: I devote a lot of my time to my Native American community through our non-profit organization.  It is called the Colorado Native American Church Incorporated.   Through this organization we practice and preserve our heritage in this modern world.

Q: Do you have a fun, crazy, most memorable swimming experience that you would like to share?
A: I love the sport of swimming because it has carried me a long way from my childhood to now.  I was fortunate to compete in the North American Indigenous Games for Team Colorado and placed in 3 events in the Native Olympics against my fellow Indian people through culture, athletics and tribal pride.  Having that discipline and respect for the sport has taught me many life lessons and that is why I continue to teach and pass on my experiences.

October Swimmer of the Month October 4, 2010

Introducing Peter, our October Swimmer of the Month.  Currently he is in Level 4 class at LoneTree, working on his side breathing.  Peter has come a long way in his swimming abilities.  When he first started Peter only wanted to put his feet into the water.  For most of the class he would only sit and watch the other kids in his class do their swimming.  Now Peter is working on his perfect arms with side breathing all the way across the pool!!  His teacher Ms. Lindsey is very proud of Peter and his progress, “Peter has done an amazing job in lessons and he is such a bright student.”

Now let’s find out about Mr. Peter!  In the future he wants to be a house builder and build gigantic houses and sell them for $1!  His favorite season is winter because he can go sledding, skiing, build snow men, snow angels, and throw snowballs with his brother Thomas.  When it comes to school his favorite subject is double recesses and then Science.  Thinking back on his favorite vacation he recalls a trip to Philadelphia where he got to ride a submarine and actually push the buttons to drive it.

We are very proud of Peter from coming so far in his swimming abilities! Congratulations Peter!

Favorite thing about swimming:  Freestyle, but no side breathing

Favorite Ice Cream:  Strawberry Swirl

Favorite food: Mac and Cheese

Favorite Color:  Yellow

Favorite Sport:  Playing catch with his Dad

Favorite TV Show:  Noah’s Arc

Favorite Movie:  Marry Poppins

We also found out that Peter invented swimming ;) and is a collector of seafood; lobster tails, crab legs and fish!
